Art Imitating Life Imitating Art
I love this picture! You’d be forgiven for thinking it was a staged shot but it really wasn’t. I was 30 feet away in another room when I turned and spied this scene. On instinct, I raised my camera and captured about 3 images before the moment was gone.
Seeing the Moment Before it Happens
I did nothing to prompt this arrangement of subjects (the bride & groom and the picture on the wall), but it was a picture I had imaged taking earlier that day.
When I first arrived at the venue I made note of that picture on the wall and the archway leading to the ceremony room and thought, what if. As a wedding photographer, I’m constantly doing this. I always have a beady eye out for potential objects and areas of interest to frame my subjects against. Most of the time, these mental notes I make don’t come to anything. After all, the point of documentary photography is to capture events without interfering with them. But once in a while, my forethought pays dividends.
